Warm Greece; heavy snow Carpathians


Saturday
High pressure across Scandinavia produces bitterly cold easterly winds for central-northern Europe. Temperatures barely lifting above freezing for Germany, the Low Countries and Denmark. Sub-zero for Poland and the Baltic states. Local snow showers for southern Sweden and Denmark, but much of Scandinavia will be dry.
Meanwhile, low pressure across southern Europe brings unsettled conditions. Areas of slow-moving thundery rain for France and Italy. Drier for southern Italy and the Mediterranean islands, but local heavy showers possible. Snowfalls across the Alps and Carpathian mountains. Heavy rain for the Balkans. Warm for Greece , Bulgaria and areas near the Black Sea, southerly winds helping temperatures to top 20C.
Heavy rain sweeps east across Spain and southern Portugal, whilst northern Iberia sees sunshine and showers.


Sunday
Low pressure continues to influence the south, producing further thundery showers, breaking out increasingly through the day for Italy and southern France. Snow on the mountains. Showery for Portugal and much of Spain, although south-eastern Costas should escape drier. Heavy rain for the Balkans, but widespread heavy snow for Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and southern Ukraine.
Staying cold for northern Europe, with easterly winds. Snow flurries possible, but many places staying dry. Close to freezing for northern France, the Low Countries and Germany, with significant wind chill. Dry and cold for the south of Scandinavia. Fronts moving into northern Norway bring snowfalls and less cold air. Some snow too for Finland.
