Issued: 0530hrs Monday 4th June 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Hot and sunny across the Mediterranean

Monday
Slack pressure across central Europe generates more slow-moving thundery downpours. These will break out extensively across France, the Alps and central-eastern Europe, particularly Romania. Thunderstorms also affect northern Spain, although southern Iberia will stay dry and sunny, 25 to 28C on eastern Costas. Widely hot and humid conditions for central, south and eastern Europe, widely approaching or topping 30C. The Mediterranean will be dry and sunny, including much of Italy and Greece . Also, most of Germany and the Low Countries should also avoid the thunderstorms. Southern Scandinavia remains very warm, 25C or above, although much cooler air and brisk northerly winds affect the far north, with some rain.

Tuesday
A very similar pattern, with a swathe of thunderstorms across central Europe, affecting northern Spain, much of France and the Alps. Scattered thundery showers are also possible for central Italy, the Balkans and around the Carpathian mountains of northern Romania and southern Poland, also Slovakia. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean will be dry and sunny, with fair weather also for southern Spain and much of Portugal. Temperatures widely nearing 30C. Northern Europe will be generally dry, with most of Germany and the Low Countries due to be dry and bright. Fresher than recently for most of Scandinavia, but still into the 20s Celsius across southern Sweden and Norway. A few showers toward the far north, and a north-westerly breeze affects the Baltic.
