Heat subsides in northwest Europe

High pressure lies to the west of Europe, and very high temperatures will be maintained across much of Iberia and the Mediterranean. Topping 40C in southern Spain and locally in the south of France, although a fresh breeze around Biscay coasts will keep things only at 20 to 23C here.
Northern France will be fresher than Friday as a cold front passes eastwards. This will trigger intense thunderstorms for southwestern parts of Germany, Switzerland and southeast France as the heat of the day develops, widely topping 30C, the storms tracking eastwards into the evening. Thundery later northern Italy. Eastern central Europe will be mainly dry, from Poland to the Czech Republic and Hungary, highs 25 to 28C. Local thundery showers for the southern Balkan states and mainland Greece, although the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean islands will be dry.
Warm and sunny for much of Scandinavia, up to 28C in southern Sweden. A risk of thundery rain moving in from the west to Norway and Denmark. Local thundery bursts also forming toward the north of Sweden and Finland.


Sunday
Another hot day to come across southern Spain and Portugal, again up to 40C for some areas. A fresh breeze continues around Biscay coasts, with a chance of local showers. Hot in the far south of France too, but much of France, the Low Countries and Germany will be fresher with a westerly breeze, sunshine and scattered showers.
A risk of thunderstorms breaking out widely across the Alps and northern ltaly, plus eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. The heat will be confined to the far east of Germany and Poland, where topping 30C. Generally dry across east and southeastern Europe. Chance of a thundery shower by afternoon in southern Greece.
Low pressure moving into Scandinavia brings rain to southern Norway and thundery showers for Denmark and southern Sweden. Warm and humid in southeast Sweden. Thunderstorms may also form across Finland, whilst the far north should be dry. Also likely dry for the Baltic states.
