Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 23rd December 2018
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

The Mediterranean will see a dry and settled spell of weather over the coming days while central portions of Europe will see a mix of sunny spells, showers and heavier periods of rain. Scattered snow showers for Scandinavia.

Sunday
It will be a largely dry and fine day across the Mediterranean on Sunday. High pressure over Iberia will bring a bright and dry day for Portugal, Spain and the Balearics. Warm and dry too for Corsica and Sardinia. A week low pressure system over the Tyrrhenian Sea will bring some light showers for the west coast of Italy but it will be dry and fine elsewhere. A second area of high pressure over western Turkey keeps things dry and bright for Greece and Turkey on Sunday too.
It will be rather wet and cloudy for northern parts of France as a trough brings some heavy rainfall to the region and into Switzerland. Cloudy too for the Low Countries with rain moving in from the north later in the afternoon. Germany will have a mainly cloudy day too with heavy showers in the northeast, southwest and, later in the day, in the southwest.
A band of wintry precipitation will clear Denmark through Sunday morning leaving a dry and bright afternoon while the Baltic States and southern Finland will see snow showers persist through the day. It will be a dry and bright day for Sweden and Norway though cloud will start to build from the Norwegian Sea through the late afternoon.

Monday
Monday will be a rather similar day to Sunday across the Mediterranean with dry and bright weather continuing for Portugal, Spain, the Balearics, Corsica and Sardinia. Most of Italy will see a dry and bright day too though some light showers will persist for western coasts. Showers will creep into the Balkans and western parts of Greece too through the day but the rest of Greece and Turkey will have a dry and fine day.
Heavy rain on Sunday for northern France, Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany as a trough moves slowly to the south. It will be a wet start to the day for Belgium but the rain will clear to leave a dry and fine day for Benelux. There will be some good sunny spells in northern Germany.
It will be dry but cloudy for Denmark on Sunday wile some snowy showers will continue for the Baltics. Cloudy but dry too for southern Finland and Sweden while southwestern Norway will see heavy snowfall pushing in from the North Sea throughout the day.
